Born in Aleppo, Wasim Maziak is Distinguished University Professor and Chair of Epidemiology at Florida International University. Before joining FIU, he founded and led the NIH-funded Syrian Center for Tobacco Studies — building an internationally recognized research program from inside Syria, a rare achievement under difficult conditions. A leading global authority on tobacco control and the epidemiology of the Eastern Mediterranean, his career stands as direct proof that world-class research can begin from a Syrian institution.
