Prof. Fawwaz T. Ulaby
Engineering & Remote Sensing
University of Michigan
Born in Damascus, Fawwaz Ulaby is the Emmett Leith Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, and one of the world's foremost authorities on radar remote sensing. He designed the first imaging radar to fly in space, and the sensing systems his work made possible now fly aboard NASA, European, Canadian, and Japanese satellites. A member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and recipient of the IEEE Edison Medal, he is also the author of a widely used applied-electromagnetics textbook adopted by hundreds of universities worldwide — much of it now offered freely to students. He served as the founding provost of KAUST in Saudi Arabia.
